It is commonly supposed that the
slaves when set free about 1825 all took
the sir name of their masters. Tho'
that was true in most cases Aunt Judy
Jackson tells us that some of them
would take the given names of their
father and adding a termination to it
would adopt it for their own sir name.
Thus arose the names of Jackson and
Franklin among the colored people in
this vicinity.
